Flag Day is Special

Checking In | MyBaseGuide

Every year on June 14 we celebrate a day to recognize the symbol of our freedom by honoring our flag. Flag Day was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 but not declared an official holiday until 1949. Flag Day should have a personal meaning for all Americans since its stars and stripes represent every state that we all live in. It deserves respect and not slander. Our President Trump disrespects the flag by hugging it. His fans disrespects the flag by wearing it as t-shirts, hats, bandanas and even underwear just to be soiled by sweat, spit and dirt. Our flag should be flying high and proud on a flagpole or draped over the coffin of a brave fallen soldier. It is a symbol of the unity and freedom we all desire and fought for to be in this country of the brave who fled from persecution, discrimination and poverty in other parts of the world.

Right now our country over the past years under Trump's Presidency our nation has suffered from all his unprosecuted crimes of foreign interference in the election, his cabinet fired and are convicted felons, his non removal of his IMPEACHMENT, THE LOSS OF HIS NEGLIGANCE IN CURBING THE INCURABLE DISEASE KILLING A HUNDRED THOUSAND AMERICANS AND COUNTING, THE LOSS OF OUR NATION'S WEALTH, THE SPENDING DEFICIT THE HIGHEST EVER IN HISTORY. And now our civil liberty in turmoil with protesting in every state in America. Our flag now is more important than ever.

At events when we recite our National Anthem and put our hand to our heart as we gaze up at our proud flying flag it is an opportunity to also kneel in respect for our liberties. A football quarterback did exactly that 3 years ago at games and was fired for it. Now police officers all over America are doing that. That player is Colin Kaepernick who was a top 10 player who has a white mother and black father. He was raised in a white family who adopted him after his 19 year old mother gave him up for adoption. He felt white inside but saw the racial injustices as he was considered black and witnessed first hand the racial injustices.

Police brutality towards black men has surfaced to the point that no American wants to see any more of it. He was just a tiny flame igniting the explosion of outrage being felt now by all. Our flag represents freedom, justice and the American way and we all need to get back to that NOW. The incurable disease killing hundreds of thousands of Americans NOW is telling us what is so important left in our fragile lives.

President Obama corrected pointed out that he was expressing his Constitutional right to make a statement and there is a long history of sports figures who did so. Jesse Owens in the 1935 Olympics protested Hitler saluting during the National Anthem gazing up at our great flag of freedom. Basketball great Bill Russell, Boxing great Mohamed Ali protested the Vietnam War, in 1968 fists were raised at the Olympics by American winners John Carlos and Jimmy Smith who won Gold Medals and lost their careers for their right to make a statement.

Martin Luther King, Malcom X, The Kennedy brothers all died in respect for the freedom our great flag represents along with the millions of soldiers who defended our constitution worldwide. Respect our great flag that means so much to so many of true Americans.
