We are in the middle of protesting for rights again but the biggest recent change just happened with the Supreme Court ruling that said that Gay rights ARE civil rights. Now the LGBTQ community ARE protected from job discrimination. It happened with a 6-3 majority vote even with the positive vote from the Trump appointee Neil Gorsuch. A negative vote came from Judge Thomas who is black married to a white woman. He should be in favor of any civil rights cases put before him since the Supreme Court voted in 1967 in favor of integrated marriage that helped him in his very own personal life of freedoms.
This is a historic ruling as historic as the 2015 same sex ruling helped gay folks in America. But there still is a way to go in the struggle for rights in the LGBTQ community and that is why I say a great day sort of. This decision ONLY applies to job discrimination. It does NOT apply to jobs where there are 15 or fewer employees. Small businesses are important. We know that small businesses employ 1 in 6 Americans. There still isn't any protections for LGBTQ folks employed by small businesses.
This ruling also doesn't extend rights to public accommodations for that community. It doesn't apply with the communities rights to health care or housing. Equal rights should apply across the board to equal rights in all aspects of life or they still are NOT equal. The House of Representatives under the guidance of the great Nancy Pelosi did pass the Equality Act that would extend these protections to them like medical care, small business employment and public housing rights but the Senate has done nothing to rule on it since last year.
I will get rid of that sort ofness when it can really be a great day for civil rights across the board for the LGBTQ community still seeking the same rights as everyone else gets in America.
