Parks and Recreation Facilities in your City (Entertainment)
Who cares? Well you should care
because it is one of the great things your city gives back to you for the
public to enjoy. There was even a popular comedy show recently called Parks and
Recreation. We enjoyed that too. What does it mean anyway? Parks and Recreation
is just that; wonderful places within a brick and mortar city filled with trees
flowers and fun. With Recreation the city offers free or low cost entertainment
events. There are pools, ice skating rinks and historic places to see like
Ellis Island to spend a day just to relax nearby.
Since 1910 New York City has
offered indoor Recreation Centers that now offer just about any type of fun you
can think of. The services are affordable and extensive. The centers offer
indoor pools, weight rooms, basketball courts, dance studios, art studios and
game rooms. There are libraries and a range of subjects to learn from self-
help to skills of various subjects from business courses to basket weaving
hobbies. If you are a New York City
resident and have an Identification Card you are eligible for discounts.
Sometimes they are closed on holidays but each center has their own hours.
New York is a large state and
contains over 1,700 parks for your enjoyment. It offers lots of hiking and
playgrounds but is also affiliated with lots of other attractions like historic
houses, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and a large public art program. How
else is the city going to keep the millions of people that live and visit it
daily busy? Where do you start? Well, decide on how you want to arrange a park
trip to your interests. Are you looking for a romantic getaway? Maybe a
historic site interests you or even a scientific learning trip.
For romance a long walk is always
good. Try Van Cortland Park in the Bronx and walk around the lake or hike the
John Muir Nature Trail for great fall foliage scenes this time of year. Or go to Bronx Park and witness the
spectacular waterfall on New York City’s only freshwater river the Bronx River.
If you love historic houses to
view there are many to choose from. The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in the Bronx
is an elegant giant. In contrast there
is the tiny Edgar Allen Poe Cottage also in the Bronx. Or visit the Colonial
Van Cortland House Museum in New York City.
It doesn’t have to be all fun and
games. There are computer resource centers offered by the Parks and Recreation
of New York City that will provide you with the guidance you need on the
computer weather you are a first time user or a teen that needs help with
making movies or power-points or a job seeker needing help finding a job or
making a great resume, there are places that offer classes and general help.
There are centers located in all the five boroughs. Have fun and enjoy all that
New York City has to offer for you.
