Tonight is the Grammy Awards. They will tell famous musicians that their music was the best of the year but they don't tell you. Why? What exactly is the recipe for a good song that everyone likes to hear? Well if you like to sing along to a song it has to be a singable melody without too many words or even too wide a range of notes. The melody has to have that singable flow. No more than a 10 note range. And then it is nice that the lyrics are easily known in just the title of the song. Old dopy songs like Love Will Keep Us Together, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, I'm Every Woman, Ain't No Mountain High Enough well, you are singing that in your head right now. They are all Grammy hit songs that made a lot of money.
Then if you really want that easily sung melody and lyrics to pop, them fool around with the key changes and make it go up a step just for that intensity and raise you up effect. Take that old song
called Solid As A Rock. By the next line the melody has already elevated a half step as you sing That's What This Love is and on and on with the hit song.
A good base line can get you started dancing like in Another One Bites The Dust or It's All About That Bass or even Billie Eilish's new catchy bass melody but written using high notes. Now music writing is more like production where a keyboard is matched up with a lap top and magic is made with synthetic sounds and instrument reproductions at our fingertips and not necessarily with any live instrumentalists. Yes even traditional instruments are being replaced by sounds on a program. So you produce a track and not a song. There isn't even a band to recognize because one doesn't exist yet a great song was produced for singers with hit songs like Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez and Demi Lovato just to name a few big Grammy winners who never give credit to any musician.
Yeah we can't forget all the great Latin Beats and produced club songs that keep us going and going either on the exercise bikes or dancing in the clubs. We even love the repetition in Another One Bites the Dust. Yeah these are all old songs but musicians are writing new great songs year after year. Music really is the gift never stopping giving. A great song has that unique combination of melody, harmony and lyrics just like a good romance. We need to speak alike words, be in harmony with each other and top it all off with those words of love and we are there in relationships too.
What we do know is that music connects us all all over the world. Musicians are always the most special people in society because we all know how to do what others do but we all know how to touch everyone's heart with great music no matter what genre of music you are into. Music is the universal language of the world. Music unites us all. It is the only language written globally with it's unique notation of the staff and notes, rests and crescendo markings on paper that can be written by anyone and played and performed anywhere in the world and enjoyed that persons creativity centuries later. Yeah musicians are sensitive caring people. You see it all in the lyrics we write to our songs. Many times our passions for life does get caught up in the evil business of politics and we dive into that with the same passion we have for our music. Yes it can get very ugly but the conversation must never stop just like we must always strive to share the loving gift of our music.
Trumpsters have to realize that their insults don't work on every musician or creative artist because we all at some point in our lives have been told that we weren't worth dirt but from our dirt we rose to always produce a new beautiful song or painting or something worthy of living
