Trump is the only President to appear at a March for Life event. The Republican party seems to be obsessed with pregnancy yet they will not approve of paid parental leave. Our country's policy is one of the worst in the world because we don't have any policy to help parents pay or raise kids yet there is outrage over abortions. The only places on earth without paid parental leave is places you never heard of and then the most powerful country on earth, America. Suriname in Northern Africa and New Guinea both very small and remote regions are the only places to join America in abandoning parents.
In 106 countries of the world, women receive a minimum of three months to recover from the trauma of childbirth and the immense task of keeping that very young baby alive. In Canada parents can take up till a year and a half to take care of their new baby. Congress, when they are not fighting over the Treasonous Trump Trial, is nearing a deal on paid parental leave for government workers. How about they raise the federal minimum wage higher than $7.25 per hour already so parents can afford to feed the babies too?
One in four American moms return to work within two weeks of giving birth. That is NOT enough time to recover. It takes a minimum of six to eight weeks to recover and that is a best case scenario with no complications. Parental leave lowers the risk of postpartum depression. It reduces parental stress and promotes healthy parent-child relationships. Leave can provide higher rates of children receiving well-baby care and immunizations. Studies show that just more leave time would result in 600 fewer infant and post-neonatal deaths per year. So when our President wants to support a March for Life he should be supporting and using his power to write a Bill to give women more damn time off from work so she can spend time making sure the baby doesn't die.
Giving folks Parental Leave time off from work is actually better for the economy. Women loose about $320,000 dollars in their life time and men lose about $280,000 dollars in their lifetime calling out sick to take care of themselves and their infants. It is the most significant untapped economic potential we could do in America today. Men who take Parental Leave are more likely to remain involved in parenting and would equitably divide household chores. Trump wouldn't know anything about that because he cheated on all his wives with infant babies at home and clearly was not involved in any child rearing support. He was busy with Playboy Bunnies and porn stars. Paid Parental Leave needs to be mandated for all American workers.
