No Order in the Court

It is a sad day to learn that Justice Kennedy plans to retire finally at the age of 81 from his Supreme Court job because he was the one who was considered the swing vote who at times voted rulings both on the Conservative and Liberal side of issues. He was on the court during 6 of our Presidents. Regan, Bush, Clinton Bush Junior, Obama and now Trump. Now with his well-earned retirement it gives the Republican already dominate government to also have a majority vote on their issues in the Supreme Court with another appointee in the Trump Administration. It is a significant lop-sided turn in our highest court because these justices can keep their jobs for the rest of their lives if they want to. That means our courts can rule conservatively for possibly the next 30 years.

The Republican weasels delayed Obama’s choice and never appointed a justice in his administration. Now the Republicans plan to have two appointed swiftly so that there will be a definite majority Republican justice in our highest court. Our Democratic ideals are now in deep jeopardy and America will never be the same again. Most of the longest –serving U.S. Supreme Court Justices lasted about 30 years but Trump just appointed a guy in his 50’s who can rule for a very long time if he wants to. Already we have seen a change in our government when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a baker on religious grounds to pick and choose who he wants to make cake batter for as if food and religion is somewhat related. What ever happened to the separation of church and state that this country was founded on? Republicans are getting their way with approving charter Federally funded religious schools and trying to control women’s bodies on the abortion issue yet nothing significant is ever being done to curb a man’s appetite for sex and his sloppy sperm creating many unwanted pregnancies.

Justice Hugo Black served 34 years. John Marshall, Stephen Johnson Field and John Paul Stevens served 34.5 years. The longest serving Justice was William O. Douglas who served 36.5 years. A thirty year stretch of a particular overwhelming opinion can change the shape of our country significantly in all of our lifetimes. Not having a fair and balanced group of 4 Democrats and 4 Republicans and 1 swing voter on our highest court is disturbing to the balance of laws in our country. So now even our courts are Republican based in all their ideals.

Now we are in the middle of a shake-up in the highest court in our land. Land mark rulings could now be overturned. Kennedy voted conservatively approving of citizens united, second amendment and voting rights. He also voted liberally approving gay rights, abortion and affirmative action. He also wrote the opinion that allowed corporate America unlimited spending on political campaigns so no wonder corporations are spending lots of money on candidates and once voted in, they get whatever they want. Trump just gave his big corporate donors tax breaks and lowered restrictions on safety and pollution. Did that trickle down into better jobs for Americans? NO. Corporate America is currently using their big corporate profits to buy more of their own stock while the average American has to work three crappy jobs just to make ends meet.

Justice Kennedy will be remembered for his approval of gay rights and the rights for a woman to choose on an abortion. Surely with yet another Republican conservative as Trump’s choice for the bench be prepared for less gay rights and less women’s right to choose. Yes it is a sad day in America and a good day for our Dictator Donald on the throne of discrimination of all kinds.
