Someone New in the Palace

She is an 11 year old girl watching TV and sees a commercial for dish detergent for Ivory Clear that focuses on a sink full of disgusting dirty dishes and pots and pans that said, “Women are fighting greasy pots and pans with Ivory Clear.” The girl born from a black mother and a white father had black girl hair, white girl freckles and fair eyebrows who decided to do something about gender inequality. She wrote a hand written letter to the president of the company Procter & Gamble. Three months later the commercial was changed to say, “People are fighting greasy pots and pans with Ivory Clear.” She was a success then and she is a success now in that she is engaged to a Prince of Royal England. She is Meghan Markle.

It is a warped version of the Cinderella story since she was poor and battling racism in her neighborhood. Unlike Obama who also had black and white parents, he immediately identified with being black since he looked like a black man. Meghan looks mixed race and for years had problems identifying with who she should identify with; be black or white. She decided to be against all racism. She wanted to be known more for her ethics and beliefs and besides her beauty it is her wisdom that probably made Prince Harry fall in love with this American, mixed race girl who has been divorced and who is three years older than him.

Her road to royalty begins with living in an apartment above a garage in Los Angeles for much of her childhood. She lived with her Mom who was separated by the time she was 2 years old and divorced by the time she was six years old.  Soon enough she also had to deal with the problems of racism and inequality. Since she had the courage to write that letter at age 11 Meghan has been an outspoken voice against judgement along racial lines. By age 12 she was in a Nickelodeon segment on film on TV talking about gender issues. She was fortunate enough for her single mother to afford to send her to an all  girl Catholic school where she learned a good education, became proficient in the art of Calligraphy and shined as a popular girl who was excellent in staring in the school plays.

It was her school experience that gave her the confidence to take on the challenge of real opportunities in Hollywood after she went to college in prestigious North Western University. She had a bit role in General Hospital, played “Hot girl number one” in a movie called A lot Like Love with Ashton Kutcher and played Rachael Zane in a TV show for years called Suits.  So how does she hob nob with royal princes with a lack luster career like hers? It was a blind date that never ended.

Her first marriage fell apart. She married a film producer that wasn’t destined to last. In 2016 she went to London. After two dates with Prince Harry she joined him on an extended trip that no one really knew about. They had the chance to get to know each other with some privacy and that sealed the deal. The Playboy Prince wants marriage now. These two actually went out longer than his parents Diana and Prince Charles who had met just 11 times before marriage proposals. Diana was only 19. Meghan is 36 years old. This marriage is notable because it represents a shift in English nobility. The English nobility doesn’t usually have marriages between royal blood and American divorced actresses who is three years older than the prince. But Prince Harry has been a bad buy for years now. Let’s hope Meghan can use her new celebrity and power to unite the world and be a representative for good things as Prince Harry’s mother Diana was to the world.
