If you are wondering how
Americans elected a person with no government experience, no law degree or even
a knowledge of Constitutional law to hold the highest office in America and
represent the free world, you need to read a good summer read book called Facts
and Fears by James Clapper who is a former Intel chief in our government. It is
an important read because he has seen it all in our government in the last 40
years. In this new book Clapper is upset with President Trump to say the least
because Trump has been so very outrageous and unconventional in everything he
does.
James Clapper has been a career
non-partisan military background guy who has served under every President since
Kennedy. I will reveal what he says right at the end of the book where he talks
about the last big investigation that was all about the Russian attack on our
last Presidential election. This book explains in great detail what exactly our
government knew about the Russian attack. What President Obama was doing with
the knowledge of possible shady dealings by the Russians? Clapper left his career on the day Trump got
elected.
The Intelligence community had
told Obama that the Russians had attacked the election process and tried to
help Trump win. In this book Clapper said that by May2017, when Jim Comey was
fired we’d learned that the Russian operation had been more expansive than the
Intelligence Community had assessed in January. We know now that the Russians
had thousands of Twitter accounts and tens of thousands of bots that posted
more than a million tweets. They posted more than a thousand videos on You Tube
with days of streaming content. Facebook has said Russian content reached 126
million of its American users—an astonishing number, considering that only 139
million Americans voted.
Clapper writes that as the leader
of the Intelligence Community. I testified that the IC did not attempt to
assess whether the Russian influence campaign impacted the results of the
election. As a private citizen now, I had no doubt they influenced at least
some voters. Looking at the savvy ways the Russians targeted specific voter
groups—for instance, buying advertisements on Facebook promoting Clinton’s
support of the Black Lives Matter movement and ensuring those ads ran only on
the pages of white conservative voters in swing states. Looking at how they
created lies that helped Trump and hurt Clinton and promoted these falsehoods
through social media and state-sponsored channels to the point that the
traditional US media were unwittingly spreading Russian propaganda.
And at how they ran a
multifaceted campaign and sustained it at a high level from early 2015 until
Election Day in 2016. Of course the Russian effort affected the outcome.
Surprising even themselves, they swung the election to a Trump win. To conclude otherwise stretches logic, common
sense, and credulity to the breaking point. Less than eighty thousand votes in
three key states swung the election. I have no doubt that more votes than that
were influenced by this massive effort by the Russians.
So, now here we are with a
confident defiant Trump who has been destroying the fabric of this country with
confidence that his best buddy the Russians will see him through to even the
next election at the expense of the gullible common American voter.
