No Cuba for Us

What has Trump accomplished besides nothing much with Cuba? The last time I noticed Obama was the first President to visit Cuba. President Obama made a historic trip to Cuba during his Presidency and became the first sitting United States president to visit the Communist ruled island since Calvin Coolidge did in 1928. “My lifetime has spanned a time of isolation between us,” Obama said, “ I have come here to bury the last remnant of the Cold War in the Americas.”  

Now there is some trade and flights and some people to be able to travel between Cuba and the United States as a result of Obama’s efforts. Trump hasn’t accomplished much since then in terms of policy towards Cuba. Why? If anything the Republicans have rolled back policies that Obama accomplished in terms of relations with Cuba. Why? According to Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) Minnesota, she has found that 73% of the American people believe that we should continue to open relations with Cuba. We want to travel to beautiful Cuba with its clear pure beaches and Cuban cigars and have some fun there. Trump’s policy although is not a full roll back is a setback in relations.

Trump’s Cuba is a chill towards them. It makes it harder for people to visit. He is auditing them and within the next 5 years you don’t know whether to go or not since now you will have to show the Treasury Department your records. How is that a positive development? Doesn’t Trump want to open a hotel there too? 55 Senators voted to lift the ban on travel to Cuba. That number included Republican Senators who want to lift the travel ban too. Finally we all agree on something and Trump does nothing? Why?

There are senators who want to lift the embargo on Cuba too. Senator Mike Enzi a Republican from Wyoming last year in May 26, 2017 in addition to 55 other Senators introduced bipartisan legislation to lift the Cuba travel ban. Trump would rather build walls than to promote free travel and commerce. Senator Amy Klobuchar D-MN). Mike Enzi (R-WY), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) led that second bipartisan coalition of lawmakers to introduce the Freedom to Export to Cuba Act. If Trump truly believes that he wants to help Americans be great he should be allowing us to export our products to Cuba who needs just about everything one could buy there.

Instead Trump imposed a trade embargo causing chaos with our relations with China and now all of our gains in the stock market is gone from the past year. Trump likes to take credit for the past year’s stock market gains but in reality the gains were a result of Obama’s policies that Trump has managed to erase in his first year in office as our President. Trump gutted Obama’s Cuba Normalization Policies. We are living in a time when Russia is starting to invest in Cuba, Spain is building hotels in Cuba, China is starting to invest in Cuba, travelers from Europe enjoy Cuba’s beaches but America is not ? We live so close to Cuba. Why Mr. Trump?
