Who is fulfilling a longtime dream of creating her OWN cable network and who also has the same initials for her network? Yes, you guessed it and win nothing. It’s Oprah Winfrey who has been the queen of daytime TV talk for 25 years. She has her OWN magazine called O. Her book club is very successful and is attributed to have kept publishing alive and she is one of the richest women in America. Her cable network will coincidently be called the OWN network where she plans to appear at least 70 hours a year on her network.
The Oprah Winfrey Network is appearing this month and is the first to be OWNed by a woman and is the first cable network to be built entirely around the personality of a lone celebrity. Winfrey, 56, considers this new adventure to be the second phase of her career. She is already worth 45 billion and she feels she needs to do more. See what women can do when they don’t have the confines of husbands or children to clog their lives with?
So in its early days, OWN is trying to strike a delicate balance: to create a buzz with publicity and a big marketing campaign that includes ads in movie theaters, while also trying to manage expectations downward so the network’s initial ratings aren’t seen as a disappointment. Smart lady to work both sides of the spectrum and try to be viewed in the middle of opinions. No one wants to debut on top and have to maintain those ratings and always similarly no one wants to debut a flop.
This network will feature many already popular celebrities that she has already promoted successfully and went on to their OWN shows like Dr.Phil, Dr.Oz, and will feature Rosie O’Donnell as well as others. But the biggest draw will be Oprah herself with her investment of $189 million and her on-air commitment to host her new show called Oprah’s Next Chapter to air 2 or 3 times a week that will feature Winfrey roaming the world conducting interviews with celebrity pals. You go girl! She’s smart enough to create another 45billion bucks for herself again in any language 24hours a day 7 days a week.
