Governor  Andrew Cuomo Signs the Red Flag Bill In New York

It is a good day when someone finally does something to curb the weapons seeping into our schools. Already in just two months of this new year there have been 39 mass shootings killing innocent victims. Mass shootings have continued in our schools with our lawmakers offering nothing much but thoughts and prayers. Finally we have just one lawmaker in our nation signing a new gun control law in his state of New York. Why is this the first law? Why is it the only state with a law like this that can only help the lack of control over weapons everywhere on our streets and in our schools killing innocent victims? 

The new law is aimed at preventing gun violence inside schools. Not by giving teachers weapons as our ill informed President suggests but by being able to take to court anyone found in our schools with a weapon other than military and trained police. They have strict requirements in order to carry a weapon that includes psychological testing and marksmanship requirements. Others at times can obtain weapons without even background checks if they buy their weapons at gun shows and off the internet. Guns should only be in the hands of police or military because it is their job to serve and protect. Teacher's jobs are to educate and mold good lives. 

Governor Cuomo said, "Today New York is proud to pass a first in the nation. The Red Flag Bill. It empowers school teachers to do something when they believe something bad is going to happen. " The Governor signed the Bill alongside House of Representative Speaker Nancy Pelosi at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The legislation allows teachers to take legal action against threatening students from buying guns. 

I love that it takes two people of Italian heritage to get things done in this country. They both already have a long history of doing good for Americans but much more needs to be done. Pelosi was a major opponent of the Iraq War as well as the Bush Administration's 2005 attempt to privatize Social Security. During her first speakership, she was instrumental in the passage of many landmark bills, including the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act, along with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and 2010 Tax Relief Act which served as economic stimulus amidst the Great Recession

We need to thank leaders to trust in our teachers in schools to do the right thing and to give them the proper tools to implement safety in our schools with laws and not more weapons.
